Precision Medicine in Autoimmune Diseases:

Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disease driven by an immune attack on the hair follicle and has devastating physical and psychological effects. The autoreactive T cells that drive this disease target specific autoantigen epitopes expressed at the hair follicle. The Artificial Immune System project is aimed at mapping these epitopes in order to determine correlations between patient HLA haplotypes and disease-relevant epitopes. This precision medicine approach will ultimately be used to improve tolerance induction therapies currently in development.
